Almost done with May...

May 29 -  I've just had another thought about Star Wars comic books.  As I look over my small collection, it struck me that, while I am often surprised to find that I don't recognize the names of the artists, the writers are usually some of the biggest names in the business.  Those names include Mike Baron, David Michilinie, Peter David, Mark Evanier, Archie Goodwin, Roy Thomas, Walt Simonson, Mary Jo Duffy, Len Wein, Jan Strnad, Tim Truman, John Ostrander, Tom Veitch, Chuck Dixon, Timothy Zahn, Judd Winick, and even George Lucas himself, whose original screenplays were finally adapted "as is" in the Star Wars Manga series.  I'm pretty sure that there are also some other well-known writers who have contributed in some way to the Star Wars comics world, but I've also discovered that my "collection" consists mainly of first issues.  Oops!  Well, in my defense, I don't buy many comics of any sort anymore, so I guess I can be forgiven for at least giving these new series' a try, even if I don't often follow up.  I did purchase just about every issue of the original Marvel Star Wars title off the newsstands back in the day, although even that series became so...um...unpurchasable by the final issues.  Ugh.  Still, it is remarkable that such an emphasis is placed upon the quality of the writing in Star Wars comic books.  That, then, is a resounding testament to the talents of John Jackson Miller, who very recently gave up his day job at Comics Buyer's Guide to pursue his Knights of The Old Republic series.  And to think that I knew him when.  Well, actually I should say "that I met him when."  While he and I bumped into each other a few times at WizardWorld Chicago conventions and at several of the infamous CBG picnics, and we even had some now forgotten conversations, I must admit that I saw him more as one of my friend Brent's co-workers, so I never had much of a chance to get to know him.  Now I'm kicking myself, of course.  And I'm jealous (also "of course").  How many dream jobs can this guy have?  As I understand it, he's also designing the storyline for a video game!  What's next, riding shotgun on the Space Shuttle?  Marrying Angelina Jolie?  Oh, well.  Best of luck, JJM!  Now, here's today's Star Wars Comic Book Character of The Day - Mara Jade!
