August 22 - First, some quick business.
A) A clarification. When I compared farmers and Weather Spotters to nerds, I was referring to their comparative/relative places in Western societal hierarchy. Where comic-book-type nerds were once, twenty or more years ago, a peculiar fringe element populated by strange outsiders who operated within an insular world of their own interests and language, which caused them to be misunderstood, if not vilified, by the rest of the larger community, now those same kinds of nerds (and, indeed, those actual twenty-year-older nerds themselves) are seen as "cool." So, when I said that The Amish, harpsichordists, and such are this era's "nerds," I merely meant that, right now, they are today's peculiar fringe element populated by strange outsiders who operate within an insular world of their own interests and language, which causes them to be misunderstood, if not vilified, by the rest of the larger community.
B) An addendum. As pointed out by Official Friend of WOMP Lori Schoenhard (and yes...you have graduated from "Fish" to "Friend," Lori! Congrats?), even though nerds in general are considered to be "cool," there are many layers to the big nerd-cake, and some of those layers are still weird and creepy as heck! Good point, LS.
C) A stunned reaction. Fellow new O.F.O.WOMP Nathan DeHoff truly surprised me with his recent reference to an episode of The Simpsons...because, somehow, I've never seen it! ACK! Even though I feel like I've seen every single episode many times (hundreds?), this one slipped between the cracks! How? This mystery is nearly as baffling as is my new quest to see the episode in question as soon, and as cheaply, as is possible!
D) A cop-out. OK. I've run out of gas again, so I'm going to just pack it in for the "night." But give me a break! It's just before 4:30AM as I type this, and I am winding down from a day that included housework (lots and lots of laundry), a shift at the dull "real" job, eBay work (some of my stuff actually sold!), and some art work (on a T-shirt design for the Tone Def All-Stars). Tomorrow, I hope to get to what I thought I was going to post tonight. Until then...
E) ...here is your Mystery Theme Comic Book Character of The Day - The Lizard!
