The Zombie

Speechless

August 1 and 2 -  Like everyone else, I've been left speechless for a few days.  I was at the dumb "real" job when The WOMP Staff called to tell me about the collapse of the 35W bridge in Minneapolis.  My thoughts instantly raced to the smiling faces of every Twin City area friend.  As far as I can tell (and not too many people really can tell much of anything yet), I didn't know any of the victims...but I do know two who just missed being involved in the sad events.  My father-in-law, a dealer in used cars and police and rescue vehicles, is among the thousands and thousands of people who regularly travel that route, across that bridge, every week.  As providence would have it, he, as normal, went to the big Twin Cities car auction on Tuesday, crossing back over the 35W bridge on his way home just under twenty-four hours before disaster.  Also, as I stopped by to check on preparations for O.F.O.WOMP Millie Garside's upcoming art show, she told me that her son John had called her to let her know that he was OK.  He commutes across that span every work day, and was running later than usual or he'd have been just about at the river when the bridge fell.  He's one of those who came "that close."  My heart truly goes out for those who were involved.  It makes you think, doesn't it?  How can you watch the news coverage and not think about those poor people, or your area friends...or, eventually, yourself?  Hmm.  Like I said, I've been left speechless.  I'll try to get back to my usual blatherings soon, including a new "...Of The Day" feature, but, for now, I will simply extend my thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families.
